Google and Samsung’s big-boy phones, along with Apple’s iPhone XS Max, are the most recent and direct competition that the Mate 20 Pro is going up against, but since I’m less familiar with Apple’s latest phone, I’ll primarily compare against the Pixel 3 XL and Note 9. These do not influence editorial content, though Vox Media may earn commissions for products purchased via affiliate links. With the rear fingerprint sensor gone, this gives the phone a clean, semi-symmetrical look that’s better in person than in pictures. In conclusion, the S9 was deemed to be a better "all-round" phone, but the P20 Pro was best for users who wanted the "most versatile" cameras of a current smartphone. Performance was excellent throughout, matching rivals running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 such as the OnePlus 6 or Google’s Pixel 3 XL.

It’s a sliver shorter than the Pixel 3 XL and about the same thickness, but it’s much narrower, which makes it significantly easier to use with one hand. We’re coming towards the end of 2018 now and one of the best phones of the year has been saved almost until last. Still, Huawei is ushering in the age of in-screen fingerprints, which deserves praise for keeping the front screen lean and clean. It’s a neat trick but one that we’ve seen on a few other handsets now, such as the Honor 10 and Huawei P20 Pro. The Mate 20 Pro can charge up to 15W wirelessly too, and with the flip of a switch, can wirelessly charge other devices, including other phones and headphones. And maybe more, to be honest: the added power consumption of the Mate 20 Pro means that this battery isn’t really built for multi-day usage unless you’re barely using it. It also has dual-SIM support, though you can’t use a second SIM card and a nano memory card at the same time. The second is an optical fingerprint sensor embedded directly into the screen about a third of the way up. And lastly, if you lamented when the Mate 10 ditched the headphone jack, hopefully you bought some Bluetooth headphones in the interim: the Mate 20 Pro doesn’t have a 3. A little fingerprint icon lights up when the screen's locked to tell you where to place your pawprint.

The Portrait Mode offers software-adjusted lighting and aperture options for bokeh effects as well as a selection of filters. The Master AI is also improved from the P20 Pro, but it still occasionally suggests tweaks to photos that tend to over saturate some elements giving it an Instagrammed look. As such, the devices utilise a hybrid SIM tray where the second slot can be used for either expanded storage or a second SIM card. inch OLED screen larger, too, with resolution that’s higher than the Google Pixel 3 and slightly better than the Samsung Note 9, at least on paper.inch screen Mate 20 X and 8GB RAM and up to 512GB Porsche Edition – offer different performance and form factors if you want a slightly different take on this already-performance-driven smartphone. I would gladly endorse this phone as an Android gaming powerhouse, even without the light-up logos or chunky design. Most noticeably, the Mate 20 Pro doesn’t have that huge “chin” at the bottom, thanks to shedding the traditional fingerprint sensor – it’s actually integrated in the display now, which is a trend we’ll be seeing a lot more of soon (including in the OnePlus 6T). Instead of having a dedicated fingerprint scanner on the back or the bottom of the phone, a patch of the actual display is able to scan your print. I’m really not sure whether these downsides overwhelm the upside of the Kirin 980 processor’s quickness and efficiency.
