They are often considered to be one of the definitive alternative hip hop acts, being one of the first alternative hip hop acts to break into the mainstream. And unlike much East Coast rap, THE SCORE feels warm and intimate--partly because the instruments are live but also because the Fugees sound so relaxed and casual.

The Score's production was handled mostly by the Fugees themselves and Jerry Duplessis, with additional production from Salaam Remi, John Forté, Diamond D, and Shawn King. First single, ‘Fu-Gee-La’ is based on Teena Marie’s ‘Ooo La La La’ and ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right’ by Ramsey Lewis, the two songs reinterpreted and inconspicuously and masterfully brought together.

Even when they're not relying on easily recognisable tunes, their original material is powered by a raft of indelible hooks, especially the great "Fu-Gee-La". Most versions of the album feature four bonus tracks, including three remixes of ""Fu-Gee-La"", and a short acoustic Wyclef Jean solo track entitled ""Mista Mista"".

Following the disappointing performance of their debut record, the head of the Fugees label, Ruffhouse Records decided to give the band another chance. On their debut, the Fugees had sketched out a pattern similar to the multi-ethnic, edgy music on The Score, but they didn't deliver it with the authority that they do here.

The Score's production was handled mostly by the Fugees themselves and Jerry Duplessis, with additional production from Salaam Remi, John Forté, Diamond D, and Shawn King. The instrumentation is as it should be for rock fans, a fairly obvious Bob Marley cover for stoners and college kids, and enough soulful vocals from figurehead Lauryn Hill to middle-aged listeners still on the fence about hip-hop. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
